This Philippine motorcycle trip mainly goes through the rugged mountains of Northern Luzon. In addition to impressive views, you will drive many bends, of which there will be days when you will drive more than 1000 bends, often directly one after the other. We also have 3 extra days where, after a beautiful day of driving, we can relax on the beach, but also in the mountains of Banaue with its impressive rice terraces and the pleasant town of Vigan with its Spanish colonial houses.  The route is mostly on-road, but there will certainly also be several unpaved paths and after the rainy period there are always many landslides that mean that there will be unexpected off-road sections. Due to the many typhoons that this area experiences every year between June and November, one never knows how much off road we can expect. A well-paved road through the mountains can turn into a fun unpaved route. In short, this trip has possible unexpected adventures.

Day 1 - Arrival Manila - Angeles City
You fly to Manila where our taxi driver welcomes you and takes you to Angeles City in about 2 1/2 hours. Tonight in Angeles City, we will stay in a clean 3-star hotel within walking distance of the city centre. Several bars and restaurants are right around the corner where  you can eat both local and western food.

Day 2 - Angeles
After a good night's sleep and breakfast, we will start the day with a safety briefing to go over important information such as local traffic rules. In particular, participating in traffic will be discussed in detail. The rest of the day you have the opportunity to explore the city before we pick up the motorbikes in the afternoon. In the evening we can explore the walking street with its many bars and restaurants. If you want to be physically well-prepared for the trip, there are many massage parlors that can help you with this.

Day 3 - Angeles - Subic
After securing the bags on the bikes, we leave Angeles City and drive south-west towards Bataan National Park. Via a slightly winding road through this park we arrive at the west coast of Zambales where the town of Subic is located. Subic Bay was a US base that closed in 1992 at the end of the Cold War. However, the Philippine government has reopened this naval base to better monitor Chinese actions in the South China Sea. Tonight we sleep in Subic. Our hotel with swimming pool is located in the center, directly on the beach. The many small-scale bars are right around the corner.

Day 4 - Subic - Alaminos
After breakfast with a view of the harbor of Subic we drive further north to the town of Alaminos. We will regularly leave the main road and some parts may be unpaved. Alaminos, this is where Hundred Islands National Park is located. Tonight we sleep in a hotel that is located directly at the harbor where the boats go to the various islands. We stay here for two days.

Day 5 - Alaminos - Baguio
We drive the first part partly unpaved along the coast, then we take the main road and secondary roads and then slowly go into the mountains to Baguio. For those with courage, we can have lunch along the way at a restaurant that can only be reached via a suspension bridge. We stop along the way at "The Lion's Head" and "The Lady of the Way". Our overnight stay is in Baguio. The hotel is located on the edge of the center, with a beautiful view of the valley.

Day 6 - Baguio - Cervantes
We leave Baguio and soon drive into the high mountains. Here we get a breathtaking view of the Pulog Mountains. The mountain road is quiet, the river sometimes flows along the road and the landscape becomes more rugged. Due to the many landslides in the rainy season, parts of the road are covered with mud and sand. Tonight we will spend the night in the village of Cervantes. The guesthouse is simple but clean. There is no other option in this remote location where there is no internet coverage and telephone traffic is very limited.

Day 7 - Cervantes - Vigan
Today we drive into the mountains of Ilocos to enjoy the views and many winding bends. After a few hours we descend and drive towards the coastal road to follow it to the town of Vigan. Vigan is the best preserved Spanish colonial city in the Philippines and even in all of Asia. It's like going back in time. The residents are proud of their special history and culture. It is a miracle this city is still standing as it narrowly escaped destruction during the Second World War. Allied forces were moments away from bombing the city when Japanese troops fled, haulting the operation. The sixteenth- century Spanish colonial city center of Vigan is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The buildings are a mix of Filipino, Chinese and European architecture. In the evening you can enjoy dinner on the city's central square. We spend the night in a 4-star hotel, a Spanish colonial building in the center with shops and restaurants right around the corner.

Day 8 - Vigan - Tabuk
Today's route goes inland over the Cordillera Mountains. Due to the many landslides, the mud, large parts of this road have been damaged and have not yet been repaired. We drive through this special mountain landscape far away from civilization. You understand that we will stop regularly to take in the surroundings or to capture it on camera. Our overnight stay tonight is a simple but clean hotel with a swimming pool and an excellent restaurant.

Day 9 - Tabuk - Pagudpud
We drive further north through vast mountainous areas along the Chico River and later Abulog River, the road is often well paved and has many beautiful bends that go through a remote forested area. When we turn off the engines, the various birds that live here will sing to you. We leave the mountains behind us and before we reach the northern coastal road we drive off-road through some  villages and the many rice fields here. The coastal road with its 1300-meter-long viaduct takes us with its many bends to the town of Pagudpud. A seaside resort for the locals, which means it is often quiet during the week.

Day 10 - Pagudpud - Santa Anna
We drive back east via the Patapat viaduct, the coastal road of Pasaleng Bay. We will regularly turn off the main road and drive through various small villages and the vast rice fields on and off-road. We leave Ilicos Region and drive via Portugal and Plampona to Santa Ana, which is located in Cagayan Valley. This region is becoming increasingly popular among kite and wind surfers who live on the very tip of the mainland. Our hotel is located directly on the beach and also has a swimming pool to relax in.

Day 11 - Santa Anna (rest day)

Day 12 - Santa Anna -Tuguegarao
We first drive back a bit on the main road. We will then drive through the vast rice fields via various secondary roads, parts of which are off-road. Parts of the region where we drive are still disadvantaged and this can be seen in the houses in which they live. About 1 hour before Tuguegarao we stop at Quibal where we can visit a 7-room limestone cave with chapel. Our hotel is located right in the center so that we can walk through the night market in the evening and enjoy the local satay that is barbecued.

Day 13 - Tuguegarao - Batad
The route continues south, we drive through the Mountain Province. The mountain road varies from good quality to parts that are in poor condition. The cause is again landslides that took place during the rainy season. Beautiful views with many rice fields and terraces. The town of Banaue in particular is known for its beautiful rice terraces. Then we drive more inland via a mountain road to Batad. We will spend the night here. This isolated village is only accessible on foot. We park our motorcycles and continue the last 20 minutes on foot to our guesthouse. Our belongings can be brought to the guesthouse by porters. It is a simple guesthouse with a 5-star view of the rice terraces of Batad. Our friendly hostess provides both a good dinner and breakfast of your choice.

Day 14 - Batad - Baler
After breakfast we walk up again. Our porters deliver the luggage, then we drive south again and then turn east. The middle part of this stage is flat, but will change again later. The mountains are in front of us again and we drive on well-paved roads, winding with many bends, up through the Quirino Mountains and then drive towards the coast. This coastal road with its breathtaking views takes us to Baler. At first glance it is an average place, but when you go to the beach you will find many surfers and nice restaurants. Our hotel is located directly on the sea boulevard.

Day 15 - Baler - Angeles
The final leg of the tour back to Angeles passes through the Aurora Mountains. Once again we drive around many bends until we leave the mountains behind us and are swallowed up by the busy traffic that brings us to Angeles.

Day 16 - Angeles - Manila (taxi)
We arrive in Manila at the end of the afternoon. You can spend the rest of the day/evening exploring Manila. Around the corner from our hotel there are several bars and restaurants where you can enjoy a pleasant atmosphere until early in the morning.

Day 17 - Departure
Unfortunately, this special adventurous motorcycle trip is over. You will be taken to the airport by our taxi driver, which is approximately 1 hour from our hotel.

Motorbikes
During this trip, you will ride on a Honda XR 150 Enduro. Upgrade to Honda CRF 250cc or Kawasaki Versys 300cc or 650cc possible.

Difficulty and offroad
During this trip through the north of the Philippines, we ride a lot between altitudes of 1.000 and 2.400 meters  and sometimes through reasonably deserted areas. There is not much off road on this tour but after raining in the mountains the road can be changed in an slightly adventurous off road track. We ride on light motorcycles which make the trip suitable also for those riders who have never undertaken an adventurous motorcycle trip before. The daily distances vary, however, there will always be sufficient time and opportunities for stopping along the way to take photographs or to visit villages. When possible, we will avoid major roads, however, we sometimes use major roads which can be quite busy, especially with trucks and busses. You have to be careful as they often do not comply with traffic rules.

Accommodation
We try to let you spend the night in good 2** to 4** star hotels or cottages where possible. However, because we want to discover pure adventure and drive to places where tourists rarely visit, it may occasionally happen that the accommodation is not optimal and therefore some adjustment is expected.

Climate
The tour is in the dry season with a temperature around 32 degrees, however we riding also a lot in the mountains and can be slightly cold when it’s cloudy or raining. Raining in the dry season in the mountains can be possible.

Clothing
Experienced motorcyclists know better than anyone that wearing good clothing is important, so we also adhere to this during the tour you are going on. The requirement is to wear long trousers (motorcycle trousers) and a (motorcycle) jacket, as well as sturdy motorcycle shoes or possibly high walking shoes and summer gloves. It is best to bring your own helmet. Please note that weather changes can occur, especially in the mountains, and it can cool down or rain. Always take 1 fleece sweater and rain gear with you. A raincoat can also be used to block the wind when it gets colder.

Insurance
For this trip you need travel insurance with worldwide coverage. Check carefully in advance whether motorcycling is included in the insurance. You must take the policy number and emergency number with you and inform R2D in advance. Damage to third parties in the event of an accident is not insured and is usually dealt with on the spot. Regardless of who is at fault, the foreigner will usually pay for the damage to third parties. Fortunately, we usually talk about very small amounts, unless it is a major accident. Insurance for motorcycle damage usually cannot be insured. Fortunately, the repair costs are a fraction of what we are used to and are therefore talking about small amounts. Any damage caused to the engine, regardless of who is at fault, is your responsibility.
